Во Второй Новгородской (архивной) летописи имеется странная запись за 1581 год: «В лето 7090. Поставиша город Земляной в Новгороде. Того же лета изыдоша коркодили лютые звери из реки и путь затвориша, людей много поядоша, и ужасошася людие и молиша Бога по всей земле; и паки спряташася, а иных избиша. Того же году преставися царевич Иван Иванович в Слободе, декабря в 14 день»
(ПСРЛ т.30, стр. 320).

Ни один серьезный исследователь не обращает на эту запись из-за ее явной нелепости. Какие могут быть крокодилы в северных русских реках? Если это не грубая подделка – а это в русских летописях встречается! – то, скорее всего, какое-то наивное преувеличение летописца, своеобразный художественный прием, подчеркивающий общее «нестроение» в православном мире через природное «нестроение». Божий мир пошатнулся, порождая неестественных монстров, и то же шатание произошло в умах христиан.

The second Novgorod (archive) chronicle has a strange record written in 1581: "The summer of 7090. The Ground city in Novgorod was established. The same summer ferocious crocodile beasts went out of the river and closed the way. Many people were eaten and people were scared and pleaded the God all over the earth; Some beasts were hidden others were murdered. During the same year, the prince Ivan Ivanovich died in Sloboda on December the 14th»
(FCRC V.30, p. 320).

No serious researcher pays any attention to this record because of its sheer absurdity. There are no crocodiles in the northern Russian rivers. If it is not a rough fake - and such fakes are found in Russian chronicles! - then, most likely, some naive exaggeration of the chronicler, a peculiar artistic technique, emphasizing the overall "disorganization" in the Orthodox world through the natural "disorganization". The God's world shattered, creating unnatural monsters and the same shattering happened in the minds of Christians.
